JACK LONG

January’s Volunteer Spotlight shines on Jack Long! Jack has been a very active volunteer for the Licking Park District for the last two years. Jack began volunteering when he completed the Ohio Certified Naturalist Certification.  Jack regularly volunteers for our Citizen Science, Programs, Special Events, and Stewardship projects. I interviewed Jack for our Volunteer Spotlight while he was installing a new shelf in the LPD office. I proudly share LPD’s January Volunteer Spotlight, Jack Long!

 “What is your profession?”

“I was a Medical Laboratory Technologist for the U.S. Army in Fort Hood, Texas. I came back to Ohio and worked as a Medical Laboratory Technologist in a community hospital.

 “What are your hobbies?”

“Woodworking, birding, archery, paddlesports, and hiking.”

What motivated you to become a Licking Park District volunteer?

Anne Balogh, Licking Park District Program Coordinator, was one of my instructors for the Ohio Certified Naturalist Certification course. I began volunteering during that time.

“What do you like most about volunteering with the LPD?”

The staff! I also love the birding and archery volunteer opportunities, my two favorite hobbies.

What volunteer activities have been most memorable for you?

Managing the archery trailer during special events. It’s very rewarding to be an instructor helping so many kids learn to shoot with correct technique.

Favorite LPD park or trail?

Taft Reserve. I love the trails. They are more rustic and primitive, less developed and more like natural foot trails.

Do you have a wish list volunteer project?

More birding opportunities! I really like the Citizen Science bird banding program that contributes to migration research.

What song would play if I started your CD player right now?

Old Time Rock-n-Roll by Bob Seger.

What book is on your nightstand right now?

Innocent Man by John Grisham.

Favorite movie?

Hunt for Red October.

Favorite person to volunteer with?

My beautiful wife! Barb keeps me on the straight and narrow. We have a lot of fun together. We worked together for almost 40 years!

Do you have any advice for anyone considering volunteering with the Licking Park District?

If you like nature and  natural resources, this is the place for you!

THANK YOU FOR VOLUNTEERING YOUR TIME AND TALENT TO THE LICKING PARK DISTRICT JACK LONG!
