Saturday September 9th turned out to be a very successful day for the Licking County River Round Up. This year was the 23th anniversary of this great community event. The goal to clean up the waterways throughout the county and maintain a clean environment for the aquatic and bird life was certainly met.
Over 430 volunteers (111 of them were kids) and sponsors exercised their muscles by cleaning up various sections of the Licking River and surrounding areas. Over 5,700 lbs of trash, 2,265.71 lbs of recyclables (1,404.71 lbs of glass and 860 lbs of mixed materials), 2,360 lbs of scrap metal and 475 tires were hauled out. A big thank you goes to the 2017 presenting sponsors: Shacklefords Disposal and the Licking County Health Department (LCHD). Licking Park District is proud to partner with these organizations, Licking County Soil & Water Conservation District and others to promote and maintain the natural beauty of Licking County.
There is a canoe and kayak launch at LPD’s Riverview Preserve in South Newark, as well as canoe and kayak access at both ends of Blackhand Gorge State Nature Preserve. Enjoy the waterways and volunteer to help keep the river clean and sparkling.
